Fight Club {Review}

Journal Entry: Tue Apr 29, 2008, 12:50 AM

What makes a good movie?
A good story, good acting, convincing scenes (environment; background actors; personalities) atmosphere...
Yes, yes, yes.
How about a storyline about an insomniac that develops a split personality, and during his nights of sleeplessness, he develops and executes a plot to destroy credit card companies using home made explosives manufactured in the basement using fat from liposuction clinics... *breeeeaaathe*

Sounds interesting? Yes?

Different, yes... But, interesting? Maybe not...

Well, then exactly what makes Fight Club such a great movie?
The fact that an environment as convincing as, for example, a basement is used that looks so "real" that you can almost smell the humidity of blood and sweat in the air right through the screen?
Maybe because actors such as Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham Carter and Meat Loaf delivered such passionate performances that you start wondering if people like that really exists.
Or is it perhaps the little intruiging pieces of life-secrets (like making napalm from gasoline and orange juice; or that home made dynamite leaves a residue of ammonium oxalate potassium perchloride) that are scattered throughout the entire film?
No, hang on! It is the cleverly disguised plot twist that blows everything out of the water!

Actually... It is all of this!

The very strange little worker ant, Jack (who has a gun stuck in his mouth and still has time to wonder how clean it is) delivers the entire happenings on this flat-tone voice and creates a very subtle, yet effective undertone that puts your mind into an almost "insomniac" state. Have you ever suffered from insomnia? Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you had to listen to a noise of some sort for an extended period of time, without it ever changing pitch? Then you know what I'm talking about. If not... Sorry for you!

It is in this state, that the mind sort of becomes free from it's natural duties and processes. Then it starts dwelling on other things. It takes in what is around it, and without even knowing it, it starts running up and down the road these things pave.

Fight Club put my mind in this state, and while in this state, bombarded my brain with all kinds of interesting little things that made my mind run circles, while trying to keep track of what is happening in the movie.

I loved it, and it is very seldom that a movie binds me like that.

Edward Norton {Jack or The Narrator} did a brilliant job bringing Jack to life. Such a strange little man, yet, still so very ordinary. A worker ant in the big machine that makes the world go round.
Brad Pitt {Tyler Durden} delivered a very convincing performance as always. Yeah, sure! Many of us would like to be like Tyler, but then again, many of us are... I think the real "magic" about Tyler is his carefree way of life. There are no rules that makes him get up at 07:00 to be at work at 08:00. There are no rules that has him sticking to his daily routine in order to get everything done. He makes his own rules, and those rules can hardly be seen as rules anyway.
Helena Bonham Carter {Marla Singer} was my favorite character in this movie. Not because of the personality of this character, but because she portrayed the character so very well. I would actually love to find out what she is really like as a person, because I actually expect her to be exactly like that in person. Such a twisted woman that she has no problem leeching onto the unexpected, the deceased or the "psycho". Whatever everyone else may think, I actually think she fits very well with Jack.
Meat Loaf {Robert Paulsen} did a good job as a body builder with tits, but if I had to choose the weakest performance, I would nominate him. Not that he did anything wrong, I just found all the other characters more convincing. I have to admit that he never looked awkward or uncomfortable with those big boobs, so that is a plus for him! (Makes you sort of wonder what he does when he's alone at home... *scary!*)

Overall a brilliant movie. Not just for a specific thing, but for so many things that works absolutely perfect together!
Strong storyline that does not fall apart or has holes in it. Brilliant acting by actors who seem to live their characters instead of trying to be them. Convincing scenery and atmosphere that makes you pull faces as if you can actually taste and smell it in person.
This is a movie that cause much food for thought and is well worth watching 3 or more times (I've seen it about 5 times now)

Some of my favourite quotes from the movie:

Jack: "When people think you're dying, they really, really listen to you instead of just..."
Marla: "Instead of just waiting for their turn to speak."

Tyler: "I say never be complete. I say stop being perfect."

Jack: "You can't get married. I'm a 30-year-old boy."

Tyler: "Reject the basic assumption of civilization especially the importance of material possessions."

Tyler: "Stay with the pain, don't shut this out.
...
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.
...
Stop it!
This is your pain, this is your burning hand!
Right here!
...
No!
Don't deal with this the way those dead people do!
Come on!
...
Our father's were our models for God.
If our fathers bailed, what does that tell you about God?
...
You have to consider the possibility that God does not like you.
He never wanted you.
In all probability, He hates you.
...
Fuck damnation, fuck redemption.
We are God's unwanted children? So be it!
...
It's only after we lost everything, that we're free to do anything."

Jack: "... I'd be very, very careful, who you talk to about that.
Because the person who wrote that, is dangerous.
And this button-down, Oxford-cloth psycho might just snap...
and then stalk from office to office...
with an Armalite AR10 carbine gas-powered semiautomatic weapon...
pumping round after round into colleagues and co-workers.
This might be someone you've known for years.
Someone very, very close to you."

Tyler: "Slaves with white collars.
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes.
Working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.
We're the middle children of history.
No purpose or place.
We have no Great War.
No Great Depression.
Our great war is a spiritual war.
Our great depression is our lives."

Tyler: "You are not your job.
You're not how much money you have in the bank.
You're not the car you drive.
You're not the contents of your wallet.
You're not your fucking khakis.
You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world."

Jack: "Under and behind and inside everything this man took for granted...
something horrible had been growing."
